This post from American Libraries hits the nail on the head with regard to signs, architecture, and less is more philosophy.

One good strategy in a new or remodeled space is to open with low-cost temporary directional signage and wait until you have determined the bump points before installing permanent directional signage.

ALA Midwinter Post #1

The exhibits floor at the ALA Midwinter meeting in Dallas, TX held some design jewels. Over the next few days I’ll be posting some highlights of what I saw.

Gaylord (http://www.gaylord.com/) has some really nice looking new furniture that is less library and more just good design. Check out the Perch Lounge Chairs, bookending the Multipurpose End Table (a hilariously straightforward name)- both modern, functional, and bright. I definitely like them the best in the colors shown, red and birch. Hopefully they keep going with the brightly colored options!

Tomorrow I’ll be leaving for Dallas to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting. I’m looking forward to hitting the exhibit floor to see what new products the designers are rolling out (Agati has a media:scape competitor I can’t wait to see in person) and I’ll be posting photos from the conference. Here we are at Day 6 with Jaime Hammond wrapping up the special edition posts! And keep an eye out tomorrow for a post featuring photographers for Librarian Wardrobe at Midwinter.

Librarian Wardrobe: Tell us briefly about your position and what you do. Have you always been in similar positions during your library career? If not, what other areas have you been in?

Jaime Hammond: I’m a reference and outreach librarian at a community college. Before this, I was a technical services library assistant in a public library, so I’m definitely not married to any one kind of librarianship. I’ve also had about 100 other kinds of jobs, including travel agent, video store employee, waitress, substitute teacher, and once I filed for a urologist’s office.

LW: Describe your style. Have any favorite colors or pieces?

JH: My style is definitely a little wacky. Usually my outfits have themes, at least in my head- themes like ‘real housewives’ or ‘old man golfer style.’ People sometimes say to me “only you could get away with wearing that” and that’s my favorite compliment. I go through phases, but right now my favorite colors to wear are brown and grey, but I try to wear something bright with them. My favorite color not to wear is white.

I’m overdue in highlighting this very cool tumblr, Librarian Wardrobe (which I’ve been reading for a while) but I’m just in time for this awesome horse sweater. “Old man golfer,” indeed.

In college, there was a room in our library called the Pillow Room. It was a room filled with pillows. We had poetry slams in there, read books, rolled around on the floor. It was lovely.
